Visit the NGV & State Library, they usually have exhibitions worth checking out.

Check out the Hotel Olsen, Melbourne. Chapel St, South Yarra.
It says the hotel, celebrates the work of the contemporary landscape artist John Olsen. His work hits you immediately; his huge yellow mural, Paella, hangs over the hotel’s entrance and a six-metre mural, The Yellow Sun and the Yarra, dominates the foyer. All up, the Olsen is decked out with 16 originals and 840 prints by the 2005 Archibald Prize winner.

HOT TIX at the Melbourne Town Hall is worth trying for last minute tickets.
