A Brilliant Day in the Blue Mountains.

A beautiful, Autumn day for a drive to Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens on the Bells Line of Road, past Bilpin. For details have a look at this excellent website of Great Driving Routes with the Bells Line of Road  as part of the Greater Blue Mountains Drive and Mt Tomah, Mount Wilson and Mount Irvine included in one of the 18 discovery trails, called The Mounts. I came the rather longer way via Leura, Katoomba & Mt Victoria instead of via Richmond. Fortunately, the bush seems to have recovered after the bushfires a few years ago, which left the area around Mt Banks looking like an horrendous moonscape.

Time for scones with raspberry jam & cream on the verandah of the Restaurant Tomah. They were disappointing & rather ordinary, but the view was magnificent. On a clear day like today, the view stretched right across the mountain tops & beyond. Pick up a visitors’ map as there’s plenty of ponds and walking paths, although some of them are a bit steep or have steps. Look for spots with lots of autumn leaves to rustle, as you walk. Great for burning up those calories and clearing the lungs!

Perhaps you might like to stay the night at the adjacent Jungle Lodge, which was recently acquired by the gardens. By travelling west from here, it’s possible to visit the Lithgow Zig Zag Railway or Newnes. Another day!

Medlow Bath, NSW. Hydro Majestic Hotel Closed Until late 2012.

Nestled between Katoomba & Blackheath is the Hydro Majestic Hotel, at Medlow Bath which straddles the escarpment above the Megalong Valley. A refurbishment is long over due as it was rather dark and uninviting. Let’s hope there’s great scones, a cosy fire and an opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views. A few years ago, this was where I first came across high teas. Here’s a link for some old vintage postcards & pictures of the Hydro Majestic on Picture Australia, at the National Library. I especially love this old advertising poster.

By travelling a little further up to Blackheath & taking the turn at the railway down to the Megalong Valley, there’s a great view of the Hydro perched up on the cliff.

Seeing your there, it’s worth visiting the Megalong Valley Tearooms. I’m looking forward to revisiting them soon and enjoying the great scones & the view. I’ll be sure to keep you posted!

Mt Victoria, NSW. Sadly,The Bay Tree Tea Shop is CLOSED.

Shock & Horror.

After enjoying their marvellous scones & pies for many years, the Bay Tree is closed until further notice, according to the notice on the door. It appears to have been For Sale recently and this is how it was described by Ray White at Blackheath.

“The Bay Tree Inn” Circa 1882

This historic Mount Victoria property (circa 1882,) is steeped in the local history of the Blue mountains and is being offered as a freehold investment. Visitors and Blue Mountains residents have been patronising the “The Baytree Inn” previously known as “The Baytree Teashop”, since 1962, as a regular venue for breakfast, lunch and dinner and especially for the world famous Devonshire Teas repeatedly listed in The Lonley Planet Guides. The building consists of a large open plan restuarant with three cosy log fires and seating for approximately 60 people. There is a north facing alfresco dining area outside. The commercial kitchen is designed for the chef’s benefit and productivity. The building includes 2 dry stores, large cool room area, office and a seperate original kitchen. Upstairs is a massive loft area offering loads of potential. The sunny rear garden area and land has an original shed, herb/vegetable garden and the massive “Bay Tree” which was planted at the time of the building’s original construction. There is an option to renovate or extend the back of the building, subject to approval.Parking is never a problem at the Baytree and with current tenants in place with a 3×3 year lease this highly successful LICENCED business offers the astute investor an opportunity not to be missed. The cafe/restuarant is also available for sale.

Leura Falls, NSW. BYO Thermos & Scones****4 stars.Wonderful..

Taking Time to Walk & Wonder

Suitably fortified, it was time to visit the Leura Cascades & continue on this section of the Prince Henry Cliff Walk. It’s good to have a map. The Blue Mountains Tourist Newspaper is available in most cafes & tourist information centres. This one has a useful map of the Blue Mountains on p.20-21 & another of Katoomba-Leura that includes walking tracks on  p. 33 here. Best of all is  the Blue Mountains  National Park Walking Track Guide for Katoomba & Leura which can be purchased at the Tourist Information Office at Glenbrook, Katoomba or Blackheath, hopefully for about $6.

From the small Carpark at Leura Cascades there’s the curious concrete shelters & its only 15 mins along the clifftop to either the Cascades or the Bridal Veil Lookout where you get a view of Leura Falls (& 15 mins back from each). When it rains, its fun to come & see the falls, take photos & find out how many other people are just as keen, silly, or crazy.

Heading back the same way, then after turning at the bridge down to Leura Cascades the walk follows the sound of the rushing water as the steps head down to the Cascades & the top of the the Bridal Veil Falls aka Leura Falls. From here the round walk continues past the top of the falls, up the stairs & up many more steps, but the reward is the great views along the cliffs, out to Mt Solitary and back across to the ladder at Bridal Veil Lookout, perched up on the cliff. After the lookout, take the path up to the Round Walk (not the steps down to Fern Bower) which will bring you back, down quite a few steps, to the bridge, and the path to the carpark. You may find a few confused walkers, like I did but its not far and there’s signs, but a map always helps. The round walk is a good workout all on its’ own!

By taking the path & steps down to Fern Bower from the lookout you come to the bottom of the falls.  Just take a thermos, some buttered scones &  the time to enjoy the waterfall as you sit and recover from all the steps. Bliss. ****4 stars. It’s hard work getting back up the steps the way you came but more so if you head to Fern Bower & Solitary Kiosk. There was a landslide in the last couple of years & the track to the bottom of the Falls was closed. There wasn’t any sign about it today and I don’t know if it’s ok or not now, although the usual sign with a warning for experienced walkers only was still there. Better to check with national parks or the tourist info at Echo Pt.

It’s a lovely area & great exercise but there’s still the Giant Stairway at Echo point, the Scenic Railway & the Furber steps to come. Right now I’m off to Mt Victoria & the Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens.

Leura, NSW. Cafe Madeline ****4 stars. Sweet scones..

When:  7 days a week 9am-5pm
Web:   http://www.josophans.com.au
Value: Pricey    Cost: Scones, butter & jam $8.50 Double Cream $2. High Tea $24.90ea.
Notes: Cranberry & Belgian Chocolate Scones are very sweet & filling. Excellent jam. Part of Josophan’s Chocolates. At times, parking can be difficult to find in Leura.

All Things Chocolate & Sweet at Leura.

Rather surreal to be driving up to Leura & finding a giant teapot & teacups on the road in front of me, especially as I was listening to the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy at the time. There were other rides up ahead so I realised they were actually part of some circus or fair moving to the next town. It was amazingly compact with the pot in the middle & the cups folded up by it’s side. Quite a challenge for them to get up Lapstone Hill.       Wish I’d got a picture!

At the top end of the Mall at Leura is Josophan’s Chocolate Boutique, while on the other side further down the hill is Cafe Madeline where I stopped for a little something before walking the Leura section of the Prince Henry’s Cliff Walk. The scones here aren’t cheap, but their specialty is scones with dried cranberries & Belgian chocolate chips topped with cinnamon sugar. You need to have a sweet tooth or possibly share them between 2. They’re fine, but a bit too sweet for me, but others were enjoying them, quite happily today. The Strawberry, Raspberry & Tahitian Vanilla Bean jam is excellent & available for sale at the cafe.

After walking many kilometres, I have at times treated myself to the Belgian waffles with strawberries & ice cream. Yum. Others, (especially the males) prefer the tasty Gourmet Pot Pies with beef, potato & mushroom cooked in Guiness.

High tea ia also available and includes open sandwiches, their scones, petit fours & some of their chocolates. Probably great for real chocolate lovers. I just like a little chocolate, not too much, so I’ll just visit the chocky shop.  Venturing up the hill, I was soon working off those calories as I came to Josophan’s chocolates. Sounds like a bit of strange logic, perhaps. My favourites are the milk chocolate bar, coconut roughs & the dark chocolate callets (buttons) for making hot chocolate at home. Just heat up the milk & when it’s boiling pour a little on top of the callets in the bottom of your cup, let it sit a minute or two so it melts them, then give it a good mix and add the rest of your milk. Voila! If you prefer, there’s also The Candy Store for all sorts of sweets at the back of the Strand Arcade opposite Madelines. Kids of all ages love it!

Now we’re suitably fortified, it’s time to visit the Leura Cascades & continue on this section of the Prince Henry Cliff Walk.

What’s a Gundowringa Scone?

Previously…. we found the Schauer (1931) & CWA Coronation (1947) Cook books & asked what’s a Gundowinga Scone?

Gundowinga scones use sour cream instead of butter!

Gundowringa is an historic homestead farm so there could well be a connection. It’s a B & B Farmstay at Crookwell, near Goulburn, NSW.  In 2004, it was featured on a Getaway program and has a range of accommodation available. Anyone been there?

Amazingly, I found the Gundowringa Scone recipe page is now online at Murdoch Books. The current version of the CWA Cookerybook has changed the spelling slightly to Gundowringa.  There’s even tips for making scones & a few other scone recipes as well. Fortunately, they have also included the jam page which has a strawberry jam recipe too. Have a look at the murdoch books blog from earlier this year when they tried & liked these recipes . Very useful, thanks.

World’s Simplest Scone Recipe…

The time has come to sort out the cookbook shelf. Ah!!! What to keep & what not. I kept an eye out for scone recipes & in the Willow Cookery Book 11th Edition from 1969 found a very simple recipe using just

Self raising flour. Butter. Milk. Salt.

I can’t find the book online anywhere. I also have a well used Schauer Improved Cookery Book from 1931 which has buttermilk scones, I wonder if it’s like the mysterious Masterchef recipe. There’s also an equally well used CWA Coronation Cookbook 5th Edition from 1947 & this also has icing sugar in their scones like the current CWA cookbook.  I’ve found an amazing variety of recipes but can you guess what’s a gundowinga scone! To be continued…..

A Popular Food Processor Scone Recipe.

Item image

‘A Wizz in the Kitchen’ which came with the Breville Wizz a long time ago, 1980’s? You can even buy it on e-bay now for under $10. This was a popular recipe,  it was quick & simple & made less mess as we “dolloped’ it straight out onto a greased & floured scone tray for ‘rustic’ scones with a minimum of fuss.

There’s also a recipe for wholemeal scones & orange scones. I think we often used wholemeal flour for the basic scone recipe. The Carrot Cake & Cornflake Cookies out of this book were quite popular too!

NB. Sorry but I haven’t been able to get permission for this recipe but there is one on my post River Cottage, UK. A Yummy Scone Recipe.

Sydney, NSW. Where do you get Syphon coffee?

I’ve been looking forward to visiting Mecca Cafe in King St, Sydney & watching them make syphon coffee. I’m thinking Macbeth-Hubble, bubble, toil & trouble, fire burn & cauldron bubble. Alas, no such excitement, they don’t do syphon coffee. My coffee officianado friend had a macciato at Mecca & declared the coffee was ‘up there’ with his favourite cafe, Vivo cafe nearby at 388 George St, which crucially, has more space than Mecca. Vivo also has a happy hour & if your onto their facebook or twitter page it will pop up sometime each day & offer you a regular coffee for $1, if your a Vivo coffee cardholder or $2 if your not.

HELP! Anyone got any suggestions for syphon coffee in the Sydney area????

Commonsense Cookery Scones

The Commonsense Cookery Book By Home Econ Institute of Aust (NSW Div)The Commonsense Cookery Book has to have one of the all time, tried & true scone recipes. It was first published in 1914 & compiled by the NSW Public School Cookery Teacher’s Association and used for many years in High Schools. Unbelievably, or maybe not, it’s still available at Angus & Robertson online for $29.95  or the abc shop or Dymocks etc. I notice there’s also a Country Womens Association Cookbook at the abc shop for $32.99. It’s the 17th Edition so it could well have a scone recipe too.

Commonsense Cookery– There’s a chapter on Scone & Loaf Mixtures that includes scones, cheese loaf or scones, puftaloons, date or sultana scones, gem scones, pumpkin scones, cherry & nut ring, date loaf, nut loaf & coffee rolls. Maybe, I’d better buy a new version with metric measures! The latest edition is much the same but has damper instead of puftaloons (fried scones) & no nut loaf.
